Damage Control

A specialized tool for optimizing images for use on non-truecolor graphics platforms (8 bit, 16 bit, etc.).

It helps avoid such nasty things as banding artifacts and helps predict and reduce visual impact of display on reduced bit-depths. These optimizations are often required for graphics used in embedded UI systems, handheld video games, mobile phones, settop boxes, etc.

Damage Control has a couple of unique features, not offered by other industry standard graphics suites:

If you're in need of any of the above features, Damage Control will prove to be a huge time-saver for you.

Here's how Damage Control works:

1. Drag a file into the Damage Control workspace
2. Choose the desired optimization mode (e.g. 565)
3. Inspect the quality (by toggling optimizations on and off and zooming in on details)
4. Save the optimized image as a PNG* (resulting file will be either 32 bit or 8 bit)

* Why PNG?
PNG is currently the most efficient open graphics standard which supports full alpha channels in all bit depths. Never resave optimized images as JPEG! JPEG is a lossy file format which will smear the carefully created dither patterns in your images.
